Hi there,
It’s been a minute! What’s been going on at your end? Mine has been thrilling, learning voraciously and taking each day at a time.
It was 745 days ago that I took a leap that has changed my life. I thought to share with you as I know you will learn a thing or two. When you do, please share with as many people as possible.
Would you believe it if I told you that I used to manage a large portfolio of client accounts across the country both home and abroad in personal savings, businesses, corporates? Or that I used to manage a balance sheet of figures in Naira and Dollars? You might say no, and if you didn’t know, now you do.
In this blog post, I will be sharing how to make a career transition to any industry of your choosing using my story with actionable steps that I took that you can apply to your transition.
Ready? Let’s do this!!
The first step I took was to identify where I wanted to go. I had a picture of the kind of organization/industry I wanted to work with which was an organization that made a sustainable social impact in communities; that valued and respected its employees; that could allow me to express my strengths fully and was going to give me a level of fulfilment and happiness.
After identifying where I wanted to go, I started to utilize my relationships by telling people about my newfound career path, my career needs, and asking for help. As you can possibly imagine, I spoke to everyone who cared to listen about this new feat and I wasn’t going to allow myself to remain where I didn’t want to be.
As I did this, I started to learn about the industry I was going into. I started to read, watch videos about the development space and how I could apply my skills. I researched what skills could be applied in the industry and I started to brush up on them. You can say I was getting ready for where I was going.
Thankfully, after months of talking to people, preparing myself and rejection letters, I finally got a role in a nonprofit organization whose mission aligned with what I wanted and much more as I have gotten to discover.
Thé twist here is that the role I got wasn’t a picture of what I wanted, but I took it anyway because the organization vision aligned with my goals. And I am happy to say that there has been no regret!
As you know, as the host of #conversationswithanu I had a conversation with Golden Dennar, a Software Development Engineer in Test who transitioned from the administration operations role in the financial industry. We had a gist about our career transition stories that you should listen to here.
You will learn from both of us as we talked about our lessons so far and how it has been.
If you are looking to make a career transition, I hope you found this useful and ultimately applicable on your journey, and if you aren’t making any move I know that this was worth your time.
Thank you for reading and listening 😉
Till next time.
Yours truly,
